BuzzFeeds chief marketing and chief creative officer, Frank Cooper, is leaving after a tenure of about 18 months, the digital media company said Monday.

Mr. Cooper has overseen BuzzFeeds creative services team and worked with marketing executives and advertising agencies to create sponsored content that runs across BuzzFeeds properties. He was previously a marketing executive at PepsiCo Inc. and AOL.

We wish Frank the best, a BuzzFeed spokeswoman said.

Mr. Coopers exit comes amid a relatively uncertain period for BuzzFeed. The company recently raised $200 million from Comcast Corp.s NBCUniversal, a sum that doubled the TV giants investment in the company.

But the new investment gave BuzzFeed a post-money valuation of about $1.7 billion, according to people familiar with the matter, meaning that BuzzFeeds valuation was essentially unchanged from NBCUs first investment last year.

BuzzFeed missed its revenue projection for 2015 by about 20% but was on track this year to meet its new target, a person familiar with the situation has said.

Mr. Cooper reported to Greg Coleman, who leads BuzzFeeds ad sales efforts.

BuzzFeed, like many other high-profile digital media outlets, must live up to high expectations after raising significant sums in recent years from investors drawn by their rapid growth. The challenge is to keep up that expansion in an online ad world where an array of publishers, not to mention tech titans Facebook and Google, are after the same pot of ad dollars.

BuzzFeed was among the first digital media companies to make a big bet on creating sponsored content, as brands such as Purina, Taco Bell and General Electric worked with the companys team of viral specialists to fashion listicles and quizzes. In search of new streams of revenue, BuzzFeed and other digital media companies have been pouring resources into creating more video content for themselves and on behalf of brands.

The company also has high hopes for developing television and movie projects, and it has a film in the works based on a series of viral stories about a stolen iPhone.

Not one to rest on its laurels, however, the company is launching the fourth generation of its platformtoday.Weebly has not only evolved its online stores to rival Shopifys, this offering also includes an email marketing module developed in-house.

The goal, according to Weebly chief executive David Rusenko, is to let entrepreneurs focus on what they love doing instead of spending countless hours trying to figure out how to optimize their online presence.

Making online sites more intelligent

While websites may not be the most disruptive technology to come out of Silicon Valley, entrepreneurs outside the tech bubble are increasingly enamored of its potential. Its easy to think that businesses are moving toward social networks like Facebook, Google, and Twitter, or publishing platforms such as Tumblr and WordPress, but Rusenko calls some of those trends that have come and gone. Websites offer a place on the internet that entrepreneurs can call their own and give them complete access to their data no walled gardens.

Weebly said that the average small business uses four different online platforms every day. And setting up a website requires more effort today, with business owners needing to set up a responsive ecommerce store and master social media, marketing, and search engine optimization. They also need to integrate accounting software and figure out shipping and taxes. This can be overwhelming. People were spending more time figuring out technology than their own business, Rusenko explained.

This is where Weebly 4 comes in, as it promises to give entrepreneurs the necessary tools to start, grow, and succeed online. From initially helping businesses plant their flag on a little online plot, to enabling transactions for goods and services, Weebly has created a revenue-generating foundation. However, the next step is to provide tools that will bring in traffic and customers, which is where Weeblys email marketing and intelligence offering comes into play.

Using a homegrown email marketing product powered by its Promote offering, Weebly is giving customers the capabilities of MailChimp with the customization controls theyve come to expect when editing a website. Triggered emails include the basics, such as abandoned cart messages and confirmation of orders received, gift cards sent, and items cancelled. The product also includes smart grouping, which is essentially targeting emails to specific demographics, like customers whohavent purchased anything in the last 30 days.

And Weeblys intelligence algorithm not to be confused with artificial intelligence will also make recommendations about emails that entrepreneurs should send. These might include automated campaigns in which monthly communications are mailed to frequent customers, emails delivered on customers birthdays, or messages in response to a change in the business Net Promoter Score (NPS). For coupons or sales, Weeblys system will display a prompt asking if youd like to send an email to customers notifying them of the promotion.

Rusenko assures businesses that the system, which was developed in-house, is in compliance with all regulations, including CAN-SPAM and best practices, and that the company has worked with Internet Service Providers to whitelist its domain.

Full funnel analytics are part of the program, so youll know which emails have been opened, bounced, converted to sales, and more.

A more robust ecommerce solution

Beyond email marketing, Weebly has revamped its ecommerce product with features thatll bring it on par with Shopify and other marketplace solutions. And Weebly now provides greater control around customizing the storefront experience. Without needing a developer, entrepreneurs can easily add products, categories, and other details with a drag-and-drop process, all in real time. Previously,Weeblys ecommerce service was limited to static designs and minor customization capabilities.

Administrators are also able to create gift cards, shipping, and labels, and to automate the delivery mechanism. By using the businesss UPS, DHL, FedEx, and U.S. Postal Service accounts, entrepreneurs can set up a shipping engine to provide accurate rates during the checkout process. Its great for small businesses to have this, Rusenko said.

As anyone whos done it knows, setting up shop online can be complicated, especially when dealing with multiple locations, currencies, shipping, and taxes. All of these make it very difficult to scale businesses, but Weebly believes it has found something that works. One of the final major updates is an enhanced dashboard that administrators have access to when logged into Weebly. If entrepreneurs want a service the company doesnt have, theyll likely be able to find a solution in the Weebly app store. And, unlike before, those apps are going to be more in line with whatever Weebly displays on the dashboard.

When you have one of the 200 third-party apps in Weeblys app store installed for your site, an admin module will appear on the dashboard. It can show you statistics around how many contact form entries you have, the number of blog comments youve received, and more.

This is the first step in Weeblys evolution to be more than just a website creation site, and there could be more updates down the road such as tools centered around advertising, social media marketing, search engine optimization, and more. With the platform collecting enough data about its customers, we might also see the rise of a CRM offering thats geared toward small- and medium-sized businesses, Weeblys target audience.

As Weeblys success has proved, websites arent dead yet. Rusenko revealed that every month, 325 million people visit a site or store powered by the platform that means half of the U.S. population visits a Weebly-enabled site.

Does Google now view search engine optimization as bad, as spam, as something you could get banned for? Almost certainly not, but thats the takeaway you could now get based on a legal fight between Google and a publisher that was banned from its search results.

The case involves e-ventures Worldwide, which had many of its sites banned by Google and is fighting in court for damages as a result. As we covered earlier, Google lost a battle to have the case dismissed, so the fight continues.

This week, an article in Entrepreneur highlighted an interesting part of Googles legal arguments, that search engine manipulation is something the company fights against, might ban anyone for and, importantly, is defined about the way many people might define SEO.

Google: SEO is not spam

So,Is Google Trying To Kill SEO, as the headline of the Entrepreneur article asks? Almost certainly not, as Ill explain. But lets start with Googles official statement that it gave Search Engine Land on this:

While we cant comment on ongoing litigation, in general, Google supports and encourages SEO practices that are within our guidelines and dont consider that spam.

Got it? SEO commonly accepted best practices isnt spam. And anyone encountering the newfangled term of search engine manipulation should view that, in my opinion, as meaning spam, not SEO.

The search engine manipulation backstory

How did the concern over what search engine manipulation means come about this week? Its from a key document in the lawsuit,a statement by Brandon Falls, the Google search quality analyst who took action against the e-ventures sites. This Wall Street Journal article about the case links to his declaration.

In that, Falls introduces the term search engine manipulation for the first time in my knowledge by anyone within Googles search team. Its not a term thats regularly used by Google when dealing with publishers. Theres not a single help document for publishers that mentions the phrase in Googles webmaster support area.

From Falls declaration, the first reference to search engine manipulation is as follows:

An important part of providing valuable search results to users is Googles protection of the integrity of its search results from those who seek to manipulate them for their own gain.

As noted, efforts to subvert or game the process by which search engines rank therelevance of websites are called webspam in the search industry.

Such search engine manipulation harms what is most valuable to users about search: the quality (i.e., relevance) of our search results for users.

Accordingly, Google considers search engine manipulation to be extremely serious and expends substantial resources to try to identify and eliminate it. These actions are critical to retain users trust in Googles search results.

Ive bolded the key parts. Google opens by saying it tries to protect its search results from those who seek to manipulate them for their own gain. The problem with this is that this statement not only applies to SEO best practices that Google itself encourages, but also to activities that violate Googles guidelines, which it considers spam.

Anyone doing commonly accepted SEO is doing so in hopes of manipulating the search results for their own gain. Googles own guide to SEO acknowledges this in talking about using its advice as a publisher in order to have anoticeable impact on your sites user experience and performance in organic search results.

In short, Google actively encourages and instructs publishers how to manipulate its search results, and publishers are inherently doing this for their own gain. SEO is manipulation, and the Google declaration suggests that anysearch engine manipulation to be a potential cause for action.

Why its obvious that search engine manipulation means spam

Sophisticated SEOs, of course, wouldnt interpret the declarations statement in that way. Knowing that Google does things like publish a guide to SEO, produces videos on it, speaks on the topic and encourages SEO in many ways makes it blindingly obvious that Google doesnt consider SEO within its guidelines to be bad.

Rather, Id say most sophisticated SEOs would interpret this new search engine manipulation term to be synonymous with web spam or spam for short activities that fall outside Googles accepted guidelines for SEO.

Reading through the rest of the declaration, it becomes pretty clear that search engine manipulation is indeed being used as a synonym for spam and does not include accepted SEO. For example:

Googles online Webmaster Guidelines include a discussion of Quality Guidelines. The Quality Guidelines enumerate numerous manipulation techniques that violate Googles Webmaster Guidelines.

In that statement, Google is acknowledging that there are many search engine manipulation techniques, but only some violate its guidelines. In other words, not all manipulation is bad and an actionable offense. SEO manipulation, that which is done within its guidelines, should be okay. Outside the guidelines thats spam and potentially gets you in trouble.

Nevertheless, the opening statement in the declaration can be read as including even best practices SEO in search engine manipulation. Its a pity Google wasnt much clearer and didnt stay with the commonly used industry terms out there. As a result, its possible for anyone to fearmonger or fear that doing accepted SEO might be a bannable offense.

In reality, anyone who stays within Googles guidelines really should have nothing to fear, as Googles own statement today says. In particular, its important to note that this declaration introducing search engine manipulation as a term was made back in November 2014. It was only just noticed now. If this was a first shot in Googles coming war on accepted SEO,then for over two years now, thats not actually had any impact.

Sometime today Alphabets Google may learn just how large of a fine it is facing for alleged Android antitrust abuses in Russia.

But the antitrust ruling it lost last month in Russia is just one of a series of setbacks for the worlds largest mobile operating system, which finds itself under a growing amount of regulatory scrutiny around the world.

In March, a Russian appeals court denied Googles appeal and let stand a ruling that Android had broken the nations antitrust rules by requiring pre-installation of some of Googles apps.

The original complainthad been brought by Russian Internet giant Yandex. Russian officials had said that the fine could be as high as eight percent of the revenue Google derives from people using its services on Android in Russia. However, its still unclear what thatrevenue number is.

The European Union announced last year that it was investigating similar issues with regard to Android. Last week, EU Commissioner Margrethe Vestager said its inquiry was pressing ahead and hinted that her agency could be filing formal charges soon, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Meanwhile, back on the home front, Android continues to face the possibility that the Federal Trade Commission will open a formal investigation into the OS. Last September, Bloomberg reported that the agency has begun the initial stages of a probe, though no formal inquiry or charges have been announced yet.

All these investigations revolve around the same basic question: Is Google being too aggressive in requiring handset makers that use Android to bundle its apps on their phones? Many rivals have complained about the practice.

Google might walk a fine line here, but the practice also seems an essential underpinning of the strategy behind offering a free mobile phone operating service in the first place. Losing such a case over the long-term could be about more than just whatever fines Google may or may not have to pay.

If Google was at some point forced to strip all of its own apps and services from Android, one could wonder to what degree the company would want to continue to focus on its development.

Anything that caused Google to back away from Android, even a bit, could have giant consequences for a huge ecosystem of handset makers, app developers, and new consumers who are able to buy their first smartphones thanks the increasingly low cost of handsets.
